Bulls rumors: Billy Donovan said thanks, but no thanks to unlimited power

Recently, the Chicago Bulls learned that head coach Billy Donovan would be departing the franchise after a missed postseason bid this past season. The news opens up a search for the next head coach of the Bulls, just as the team is also looking for a new general manager after recently scrapping their front office regime.

Now, more information is coming to light from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania on how Chicago pulled out all the stops in an attempt to convince Donovan to stay, but to no avail.

“The Bulls would’ve given him any amount of years, would’ve given him more money if he wanted to stay, even given him a managerial role from my understanding,” reported Charania, per 104.3 The Score on X, formerly Twitter.

It’s not entirely clear what Donovan did with the Bulls organization in order to warrant such immense pull with the team, not having won a playoff series during his time in the Windy City, but clearly, his decision to leave the Bulls was his own, and not Chicago’s.

Whoever the Bulls end up selecting as their next head coach will be inheriting an interesting team that does have some semblance of young talent in the form of Josh Giddey, Matas Buzelis, and whoever the Bulls take with their first-round draft pick in a couple of months.

This season was the first in five years in which the Bulls did not make any version of the postseason, having exited in the play-in round in each year since 2023, and losing in the first round the season before that.

For now, Chicago will turn its attention to the NBA Draft lottery, which is slated to take place on May 10.
