Analyst says Miami ‘upgraded’ at QB after Carson Beck’s departure

The Miami Hurricanes acquired Darian Mensah through the transfer portal this offseason to step in as the program’s new starting quarterback. Hours before the team’s season opener, one analyst proclaimed that Mensah is a clear upgrade over Carson Beck.

During a segment on ESPN’s “Bussin’ and Pate,” college football analyst Josh Pate declared that Miami managed to upgrade its quarterback position for the new season. He also went on to explain just how solid a depth chart the Hurricanes have around their junior signal-caller.

“All due respect to Carson Beck, I think they upgraded at quarterback with Darian Mensah,” Pate said. “I love the fact that there were a couple thousand plus receivers around the ACC last year, and one of them was Malachi Toney, and he’s a superstar… If you go to a Miami practice… and you watch guys, half the time you’re asking, ‘Who’s that dude?’ And it’s not a starter, but it’s a dude that is going to be in the prime defensive rotation a year from now.”

Mesnah played as the starting quarterback for the Due Blue Devils before signing with Miami in the transfer portal. He’s flashed major potential early in his collegiate career, as he led the ACC in passing yards (3,973) and passing touchdowns (34) while completing 66.8% of his pass attempts.

He steps into the Hurricanes’ starting role after Carson Beck left for the NFL. Beck was taken by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He finished his lone season at Miami with 3,813 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and an ACC-high 72.4% completion percentage. If Mensah can top those numbers, watch out for the Hurricanes.
