1:25 Haydock – The Lost King

There are some smart but inconsistent performers amongst the Superior Mile field so it might be a good idea to side with an improver with the potential to compete at this level. 

Andrew Balding is having an excellent season and THE LOST KING has won each of his last two starts.

The son of Kingman started the year in good form and landed a 7f handicap at Kempton back in January, before winning well over an extended mile at Wolverhampton two starts later. He ran well in the All-Weather Championships Mile, where he finished third.

Balding’s four-year-old returned to winning ways in a handicap over a mile at York in July and went on to follow up in a very valuable event at the Ebor Festival off a mark of 102. Now rated 109, he should be up to competing at this level and victory wouldn’t be a surprise.

2:10 Ascot – Into The Light

You can’t knock Charlie Appleby’s form in the last couple of months and his strike-rate in the last fortnight is definitely healthy. He runs INTO THE LIGHT here and Toby Moore’s 7lb claim could make all the difference here and facilitate a return to winning ways for the colt.

Only making his debut in February, he managed to win a 1m2f maiden at the expense of Al Azd, who has since developed into a useful handicapper. Things didn’t go to plan at Royal Ascot but he did get back on track when winning a 1m3f handicap at Glorious Goodwood.

Connections stepped him up in trip for the Melrose at York when last seen and the three-year-old failed to see out the trip on that occasion. Back down to 1m4f here, we should see a much improved performance, especially as he’s effectively down to a mark of 89.

3:40 Haydock – Big Mojo

Last year’s renewal could provide the key form here and that’s why Mick Appleby’s BIG MOJO gets the nod once again. The very talented sprinter doesn’t always put his best foot forward but is capable of producing some excellent form when on a going day.

The 2025 Sprint Cup attests to that as Big Mojo managed to earn a first top-level success when coming out on top. It’s also worth noting that William Buick was on board that day and he returns for the ride, as regular jockey Tom Marquand is riding Almeraq for his boss William Haggas.

It has been a bit of a below-par season on the whole but his confidence would have returned, after he managed to land a Group 3 at the Curragh last time out. Hopefully he can return to his best now and will certainly be going close if doing so.
