Astros lose pitcher with 2.13 ERA to injured list

The Houston Astros are placing left-handed relief pitcher Steven Okert on the injured list, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Okert is headed to the IL due to a right hamstring strain. Left-handed pitcher Bryan King has reportedly been promoted to the big league roster in a corresponding move.

Pitching has been a problem at times for the Astros this season, but Okert has been especially reliable. Injuries have also been a problem for the team, though. The Astros are obviously hopeful that Okert can return as soon as possible.

Okert, 35, has turned in a stellar 2.13 ERA across 68 outings in 2026. He has quietly become one of the best relievers in the game. In 2025, Okert pitched to a 3.01 ERA in his 68 outings on the mound.

He does not always receive much attention, but Houston understands how important he is to the team’s performance. The Astros will need him in the bullpen if they want to find any level of success in the playoffs.

The Astros currently hold a 72-69 overall record. They are two games ahead of the second place Texas Rangers in the American League West standings. The Astros most recently won three out of four games against the Chicago White Sox.

Houston is now set to begin a three-game series at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The first contest of the series between the Diamondbacks and Astros is scheduled for Friday night at 8:10 PM ET.
