Thomas Castellanos’ status for Texas Tech’s season opener vs. ACU revealed

The Texas Tech Red Raiders landed former Florida State Seminoles quarterback Thomas Castellanos as a late addition in the transfer portal, after being granted a fifth year of college football eligibility. With the program set to take on the ACU Wildcats in the season opener on Saturday, Castellanos’ availability for the contest was officially revealed.

Reports indicate that the double senior will be active on Texas Tech’s roster for the Week 1 matchup against ACU, according to Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. The decision comes after a Kentucky judge issued a temporary preliminary injunction for Castellanos in an eligibility lawsuit.

“QB/WR Thomas Castellanos will be available for Texas Tech’s season opener Saturday after completing the required acclimation practices, sources tell On3,” Nakos reported. “The NCAA was denied emergency relief in the case earlier today.”

Castellanos was one of several players from the 2022 high school class granted an extra year of eligibility. While he will now play for the Red Raiders this season, others in his 2022 class were not as successful, as their eligibility was stripped by a separate federal court decision in Colorado.

Texas Tech is Thomas Castellanos’ fourth team in five years playing college football. He began his collegiate career as a freshman in 2022, playing five games for the UCF Knights. The Georgia native then transferred to Boston College, where he played for two years before transferring to Florida State last season.

Thomas Castellanos played 12 games as the starter for the Seminoles, totaling 2,760 passing yards, 557 rushing yards, and 24 total touchdowns (15 passing, 9 rushing). He also owned a 58.3% completion percentage while throwing nine interceptions.

Texas Tech will be relying on Will Hammond at quarterback this season. While Castellanos is considered a quarterback as well, his athleticism gives head coach Joey McGuire a versatile weapon for the offense.
