LSU football faces ‘significant’ risk if they play ex-NFL players vs. Clemson

With the story around college football that the LSU football team has the intention of adding ex-NFL players to the roster, the risks for the school could be severe. As the SEC stands firm on the idea of the LSU football adding former NFL players to the program as against their own rules, despite a judge ruling deeming it fine, this insider would speak on where everything stands.

The Tigers have the ability to add tight end Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to the team, who were on the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints this offseason, respectively, but were granted an injunction by a judge to return to college football. Leading them to transfer to LSU, the SEC has sued the school and laid down rules that players who signed NFL contracts shouldn’t be allowed to play.

If the SEC wins its court battle and the Tigers field the former NFL players, then “significant potential punishments loom,” according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on SportsCenter.

“What lawyers can’t tell us with any clarity is: because LSU is protected right now from this court order, if the SEC then goes on and wins its court battle, can the SEC punish them for making an action that happened under a protected court order?” Thamel said.

“The risk is significant for LSU: a half-season suspension for Lane Kiffin, tens of millions of dollars in fines, their voting privileges,” Thamel continued. “Plus, Greg Sankey…has the autonomy to make his own punishments. So, we will know by 11:59 p.m. local tonight whether or not those gentlemen are added to the LSU football roster.”

As Thamel says, it remains to be seen what the LSU football program decides to do before Saturday’s opener against Clemson.
