Brewers’ Brice Turang ends longest losing streak of Pat Murphy era
The Milwaukee Brewers halted a six-game losing streak, the longest of the Milwaukee Brewers’ tenure under manager Pat Murphy, with a 2-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, relying on pitching efficiency and an unconventional eighth-inning rally.
Milwaukee managed just three hits and did not record an extra-base hit, but capitalized on a sequence of soft contact in the eighth inning. Leading off, David Hamilton reached on an infield single, followed by Sal Frelick reaching via a catcher’s error. William Contreras then hit a ground-ball single to right field, scoring Hamilton and advancing Frelick to third. Brice Turang produced the game-changing play with an RBI groundout, allowing Frelick to score the go-ahead run. All four balls in play during the rally were weakly hit, showcasing the Brewers’ reliance on situational execution rather than power.
Milwaukee’s pitching staff carried the performance. Starter Chad Patrick worked 6 2/3 innings on 81 pitches, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. It was the first time this season a Brewers starter recorded an out in the seventh inning. Patrick induced consistent weak contact and escaped limited threats, including a seventh-inning sequence where the Blue Jays placed two runners on before being retired.
Toronto’s only run came in the first inning when Daulton Varsho walked, advanced on a single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jesus Sanchez. Blue Jays starter Dylan Cease was brilliant, throwing six shutout innings with two hits allowed, three walks, and six strikeouts.
Out of the bullpen, DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Abner Uribe combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Ashby improved to 4-0, while Uribe secured his first save of the season by retiring the side in order in the ninth. The save opportunity came after Trevor Megill allowed three runs in a blown save during a 9-7 extra-inning loss one day earlier.
Defensively, Brandon Lockridge contributed in the fifth inning with a leaping catch in foul territory that helped prevent damage. Toronto stranded multiple runners late, including two-on situations in both the seventh and eighth innings.
The victory kept Milwaukee from dropping below .500 and avoided a seven-game skid, which would have been their longest since 2022. The Brewers now have an opportunity to clinch the series with a win on Thursday and carry that momentum forward.
