Blue Jackets’ Rick Bowness has no regrets after ripping players following Capitals loss

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost their final game of the 2025-26 NHL season. It was a close loss according to the 2-1 final. However, head coach Rick Bowness ripped into his players following the game for what he considered to be a lack of effort and care. During this, he promised he would change the culture in the locker room.

Bowness’s future was up in the air at the time. He took over the Blue Jackets midseason, and was only signed through the end of this campaign. However, his future is no longer in question. Bowness is returning to Columbus and remaining the team’s head coach. And on Thursday, he stood by his earlier comments at his end-of-season press conference.

“Did I push the bar a little bit? Yeah. And I know that, but that’s me. I’ve got to live with myself. I’m not going to walk out of here and say, ‘Oh, God, I shouldn’t have done that. I shouldn’t have done this.’ Did I push it? Yeah. I pushed the envelope a little bit. But that’s who I am,” the Blue Jackets head coach said, via The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline.

The Blue Jackets are certainly disappointed to see their season end in the manner it did. Columbus challenged for a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year. However, Columbus failed to clinch a postseason berth for the sixth straight season.

Bowness returning to the fold gives the team needed continuity. The veteran bench boss is clearly motivated to turn things around at Nationwide Arena. Only time will tell if he can successfully make the changes he seeks to enact.
