Arch Manning hit with underwhelming ‘solid’ review from rival coach of Texas

Texas football earns one more season of the Arch Manning hype train. Many fans believe Manning will go No. 1 in the 2027 NFL Draft. Dane Brugler of The Athletic already has him going ahead of Oregon star Dante Moore, who’s plugged at No. 3.

But not everyone buys Manning-mania. Especially following a mixed 2025 debut from the past prized five-star recruit.

One rival coach of the Longhorns bluntly handed Manning an underwhelming “solid” take when speaking with Athlon Sports Wednesday. This SEC coach spoke on the condition of anonymity.

“I thought Arch (Manning) got better as the season went on. Is he what he was unfairly hyped to be? Probably not, but I think he’s a good solid quarterback in this league,” the coach told the outlet.

Those words paint a less-than-stellar picture for Manning. Especially following countless of scrutiny and attention he faced before the 2025 season.

Many national pundits hailed Manning as the Heisman Trophy favorite despite not taking extensive snaps in 2024. He battled then briefly won the starting reins from Quinn Ewers before giving way to him toward the end of that true freshman campaign. Manning flashed his potential for stardom early, helping fuel the Heisman talk of the 2025 preseason.

Except Ohio State frustrated him early down in Austin, bottling him to 170 yards and just one touchdown during the 14-7 loss. He didn’t scale past the 300-yard mark until Week 4 against Sam Houston State. Florida picked him off twice in its upset win before firing head coach Billy Napier.

Manning still spearheads a deep group of potential 2027 rookie passers for the league. Bettering his 2025 totals can spark renewed Heisman and top overall pick debates.
