Ravens’ Ray Lewis reveals how close Peyton Manning came to joining Baltimore
Imagine Peyton Manning trading his signature audible calls in Denver for the purple and black of the Baltimore Ravens. According to Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, that alternate reality was incredibly close to happening.
Lewis recently dropped a massive “what-if” on the NFL world, revealing that he nearly convinced Manning to sign with the Ravens when the legendary quarterback became a free agent in 2012.
“I was literally 30 seconds away from Peyton Manning saying yes to come to Baltimore,” Lewis explained.

The recruitment pitch took place over drinks, with Lewis painting a picture of an unstoppable pairing. He wanted to combine one of history’s greatest offensive minds with a notoriously dominant defense.
“Me and him were sitting at the bar for hours, and I’m saying, look, if I put you on one side, you leave me on the other side, and me and you go at this thing together,” Lewis said. “I sold him, I sold him, I sold him, I sold him. Then at the last minute, he ended up staying home.”
Manning famously signed with the Denver Broncos instead, a decision that set the stage for one of the most unforgettable playoff clashes in NFL history.
Instead of teaming up, Manning and Lewis squared off in the 2013 AFC Divisional Round, a classic matchup now known as the “Mile High Miracle.” The game highlighted exactly why Lewis wanted Manning. Manning completed 28 of 43 passes for 290 yards. However, the Baltimore defense had the final word. Lewis racked up a staggering 17 tackles in the freezing cold, and the Ravens intercepted Manning twice. The second interception, coming in overtime, set up Justin Tucker’s game-winning field goal to secure a 38-35 Baltimore victory.
The Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl, giving Lewis a storybook ending. Still, fans will forever wonder how many rings a Manning-Lewis tandem could have won.
