Mariners tie brutal all-time MLB record in loss to Brewers
The Seattle Mariners just suffered one of the worst losses in MLB history. Facing arguably the best team in baseball today, the Mariners looked completely out of sorts in their series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night at American Family Field in Wisconsin.
The Mariners were not just shut out by Milwaukee; they were crushed and blown into smithereens in historic fashion by the Brewers, who came away with a 22-0 victory.
Seattle’s loss “ties an MLB record for most lopsided shutout loss in MLB history,” according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Perhaps nothing better sums up Seattle’s embarrassing loss than the boneheaded play made in the outfield by Mariners star Julio Rodriguez, who forgot how many outs there were and threw the ball into the stands, allowing Milwaukee to score its 21st run of the contest.

It was just that kind of night for Rodriguez and the Mariners, whose loss killed the momentum they were enjoying heading into the Brewers series. Seattle entered Tuesday having won the final two games of a series against the Houston Astros on the road.
The game was actually close through the first four innings, with just a run scored between the Mariners and the Brewers over that stretch. The wheels started to fall off for Seattle in the fifth inning, where the Brewers scored five runs and scored that many again in the sixth inning.
Two more runs were scored by the home team in the seventh before unleashing even more punishment on the Mariners’ pitching with a wild nine-run eruption in the eighth frame.
It can’t be that bad again for the Mariners on Wednesday, when they look to bounce back after such humiliation at the hands of the Brewers.
Seattle drops to 59-67 in the standings, 4.5 games off the top of the AL West.
