Upset Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. seems to blame umpire after failed double play

Jazz Chisholm Jr’s infield play has been… fascinating to watch. Coming over from the Miami Marlins a few seasons ago, Chisholm had started playing in the outfield by the time he was traded to the New York Yankees. In New York, Chisholm was moved back to his natural position at second base.

That’s come with a lot of pain for the defense. Chisholm’s defense has been hit or miss… and it’s missing far too often for the tastes of fans. Last season, the Yankees’ second baseman committed 12 errors at the position, leading the league.

Against the Baltimore Orioles, Chisholm added yet another error to his ever-growing list. What’s even worse is that the Yankees’ 2B seemingly gave up on the play on a perceived error by the umpire. After failing to field a line drive to him, Chisholm seemed to gesture at the umpire for not moving out of the way of the ball.

Instead of what should have been a routine inning-ending double play, the Orioles loaded the bases with just one out. Carlos Rodon was able to get out of the jam after striking out the next two batters, but that was a dangerous moment for the Yankees. Chisholm also struggled in the batter’s box, going 0-for-4 and striking out twice.

Chisholm’s batting average for the year sits at a measly .214, struggling significantly. The Yankees infielder has come in clutch in some moments, hitting crucial home runs to keep the team alive. However, his inconsistency at the plate makes him an unreliable player in the postseason. His issues on defense only exacerbate that problem.

The Yankees have a firm grasp on one of the last Wild Card spots, and still have an outside shot at the division title. Barring a catastrophic collapse late in the season, they’re bound to make it to the postseason. Here’s to hoping that Chisholm’s fielding issues don’t cost them a game like it did last year, when he failed to turn in a double play that led to the Blue Jays taking control of Game 4 of the ALDS.
