Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr. walks off the Athletics with clutch RBI

Not much has gone right for the Kansas City Royals during the 2026 season. But on most nights, shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. is still putting on a show.

On Tuesday, Witt came up clutch. With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, the shortstop blooped a liner into left to give the Royals a 4-3 victory over the Athletics.

The Royals found themselves trailing 3-0 entering the seventh inning. Vinnie Pasquantino helped cut into that lead with a seventh inning double. But it wasn’t until the ninth when Kansas City really broke out. After a two-run single by Tyler Tolbert, Witt put the finishing touches on their comeback victory.

It was the only hit he had all night, but the Royals star made sure it counted. Witt is now hitting .287 with 15 home runs, 47 RBIs and 33 stolen bases over 108 games. Despite uncharacteristically missing time with injury, Witt still leads the team in home runs, ranking fourth in home runs and RBIs. He has been on a tear lately, hitting .333 with two home runs, eight RBIs and three stolen bases over his last fifteen games.

An All-Star for three-straight seasons, it’s not shocking to see Witt make a difference at the plate. But the shortstop can’t do it all, and that is evident by Kansas City’s recent track record. The Royals had made the place once since 2015, losing in the ALDS in 2024.

Even with their win on Tuesday, the franchise is still 53-74 on the year. But as long as they have Witt, the Royals know they have a player to build around.
