Fever’s Sophie Cunningham appreciates Tempo fans despite getting booed
Sophie Cunningham saw her popularity rise after signing with the Indiana Fever last season. She became one of the more beloved players in the WNBA because of her personality and charm. These days, however, her star has lost some of its shine.
The Fever won their fifth straight game after taking down the Toronto Tempo, 101-95, at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday. The fans made it clear to Cunningham that they did not like her, loudly booing her throughout the contest.
The 30-year-old guard has been walking on eggshells since sharing her polarizing stance on transgender athletes.

Despite the negative reception in Toronto, Cunningham tipped her hat to the fans.
“The crowd was absolutely amazing. I think that’s what sports is all about. You’re going to get boos and you’re going to get cheers,” said Cunningham in the video posted by the Toronto Star’s Libaan Osman.

She finished with 13 points, including 3-of-3 shooting from long distance, in 28 minutes off the bench. She added two rebounds and two assists.
Kelsey Mitchell had a record-setting performance for the Fever, scoring a game-high 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Caitlin Clark added 24 points, three rebounds, and seven assists.
Cunningham’s recent remark on transgender athletes has sowed division in the WNBA, with several players disagreeing with her. The WNBA Players Association issued a statement, stressing the need for inclusivity and more support for transgender athletes.
Cunningham also got into a physical scuffle with DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky following her controversial comment. Carrington gave a hard foul on Cunningham, leading to her ejection and a direct shot at the Fever on Threads.
