Anthony Richardson’s usage update doesn’t make it sound like he’s in Shane Steichen’s plans

The Indianapolis Colts know what their starting quarterback will look like this season, but as far as backups, it’s uncertain who will be in the plans. Anthony Richardson is one player’s who future with the team is up in the air, and this latest response from him about possibly being in short-yardage situations doesn’t sound too promising.

“Not necessarily. He’s just telling me be ready. If I get the opportunity, just go out there and play. … Showcase what I can do and just be me,” Richardson said.

Richardson was on the field for the Colts in their second preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, and he finished completing three of his nine passes for 24 yards. He didn’t show much that the Colts should be satisfied about, and that could go a long way when evaluating if he’ll be on the roster when it’s time to make cuts.

At the same time, Richardson and the Colts haven’t been on the same page for a few months, and the quarterback requested a trade earlier in the offseason. When Richardson spoke about the request, it seemed like he was still open to landing somewhere else.

“So I’m not necessarily sure what’s going on with that, but I’m just here right now and trying to make sure I can, you know, stand my foot on this team and be the best version of myself I can be for the team,” Richardson said.

The thing is, the Colts may not be open to trading him, especially if they plan on keeping three quarterbacks on the roster. Richardson is still young, and there could be a chance for him to develop in his role, but he won’t be getting that much development sitting behind two other players.

It’ll be interesting to see how the situation plays out, and if Richardson is truly in their future plans.
