Aaron Judge gets 100% real about Yankees historic inning vs. Athletics

The New York Yankees beat the Athletics 13-8 on Sunday in historic fashion. The Bombers put up all 13 of their runs in the third inning, the first team to have a dominant inning like that and score 0 runs the rest of the game. After the game, Yankees captain Aaron Judge spoke about the historic inning and the speech that led up to it.

YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits asked Judge about a speech he gave the Yankees’ dugout before the historic inning.  “I just felt like we were a little asleep there the first two innings. I expect more out of the guys, and I know they expect more out of themselves. So, a couple choice words there to get it going. The boys responded,” Judge said.

“I never have,” Judge said when asked if he had been part of an inning like that. “To bat around with no outs? That’s incredible, that’s what this team is capable of doing. We got our backs up against the wall, found a way to dig ourselves out of it, and continue to keep the pressure on them. We needed all 13 of those runs, because the A’s kept swinging, kinda came back there.”

The Yankees captain made one of the three outs, striking out for the second out of the inning. But that was his second at-bat, following an RBI single that made the score 4-3. With the game seemingly out of reach, Judge was pulled from the game in the 7th inning. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the game.

The Yankees take on the blistering-hot Cleveland Guardians at home in their next series. New York has struggled against the premier teams in baseball this year, a group the Guardians are putting themselves in. Cam Schlittler toes the slab in Game 1 on Tuesday.
