3 ways Aaron Judge’s return will massively help the Yankees

After missing exactly 99 days due to a stress fracture in his right first rib, New York Yankees All-Star and three-time American League MVP Aaron Judge is set to return in Tuesday night’s series opener against the Colorado Rockies.

The timing could not be better for an 81-62 New York squad that is attempting to secure home-field advantage in a potential Wild Card series, if not salvage a puncher’s chance at an AL East crown before the regular season concludes.

It’s unclear how healthy Judge will be initially, but there are three clear ways the California native will impact the Yankees once he takes the field.

“I’m not too worried about the power or bat speed,” Judge told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “I feel like even if it’s a tick off, I still think it’s better than nothing.”

Across his first 59 games of 2026, Judge hit 17 home runs, collected 38 RBIs and posted a .908 OPS. When healthy, there is no question about what he can produce at the plate.

While he was once considered a pure power hitter, the former reigning AL batting champion has also proven that he can be disciplined and be a key catalyst. Given the nature of his injury, it is not known how much of a “ramp up” would be required until he is at full strength. But his skillset at any capacity can make opposing pitchers pay.

“We’ve had long stretches where the offense has struggled. I think a big part of that is not having your guy,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “I also feel like that’s ticked up here in the past couple of weeks, where we’ve really started to play better offensively. We certainly look forward to getting our guy back.”

Of course fans and pundits will automatically search for the power stroke that has made the captain one of the game’s most feared hitters, but his overall profile will be just as important, especially considering that others will need to contribute if the Bombers have designs on making a deep October push.

Other Yankees will be attacked more frequently with Aaron Judge in the lineup

Judge will still be an important piece, regardless of the numbers he puts up upon his return. Pitchers will not want to attack the zone when facing Judge, and while he could turn some mistakes into home runs and extra-base hits, the Yankees could also benefit from singles and walks that give others like Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones, and Luis Garcia Jr. chances to drive in runs.

“The guys are rolling, guys are swinging the bat well,” Judge said. “Especially getting a chance to give Spencer [Jones] a little run here in the outfield, which is great. Giving [Heliot] Ramos a chance to get his feet wet in New York a little bit. Whenever [Boone] calls and needs me, I’ll be there.”

Judge will likely play the field upon his return, but could also exit games early in an effort to stay fresh down the stretch. Even still, Boone will be able to trot out lineups that include Judge, Rice, and Garcia Jr..

The trio is arguably New York’s most formidable group, and their prosperity will be paramount down the stretch. It is possible that Judge’s arrival will impact the opportunities that both hitters receive at the plate and take a certain amount of pressure away from their at-bats, even if there are runners in scoring position.

Further, with Judge, a right-hander, back in the frey, it will be interesting to see if Boone will more willing to keep Garica against southpaws instead of opting to play veteran Paul Goldschmidt. One could make the argument that Judge’s ability to get on base should afford Boone the comfort of playing Garcia beyond any particular matchup. Even if his numbers are not favorable against left-handers, his power becomes more dangerous and viable with Judge in the lineup.

There is less than a month to go in the regular season, and Judge may have arrived in the nick of time as the Yankees try to dominate the final 19 games of their 2026 campaign.
