Transfer Notebook: Man United suffer major blow in pursuit of key target

Manchester United have been dealt a major blow in their hopes of signing England defender Lewis Hall.

talkSPORT understands the 22-year-old Newcastle left-back is close to agreeing a new deal at St James’ Park.

Hall was Man United’s top defensive target this summer but ultimately scrapped plans to sign him after being told by senior figures on Tyneside he was not for sale.

That has left a lot of United fans frustrated with long-serving Luke Shaw the only senior out-and-out left-back on their books.

The Red Devils are planning a fresh assault for him next summer. However, with Hall now set to commit his future until 2031, it is likely to take a mega offer for United to land their man.

Rising PL star to get his shot

Fulham teenage star Josh King is in line for his first England call-up.

King has made an excellent start to the new season, scoring twice in the first three games, including in front of Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was included in England’s pre-World Cup training camp in America along with Ethan Nwaneri, Rio Ngumoha and Alex Scott.

He has now put himself firmly in contention for a squad place for England’s upcoming Nations League games against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia.

Sterling staying put

Raheem Sterling has rejected the chance to relaunch his career in Brazil.

talkSPORT has been told free agent Sterling received an offer from Vasco da Gama following talks with his advisers.

The Rio de Janeiro-based outfit is the former club of ex-Premier League stars Philippe Coutinho and Dimitri Payet, as well as World Cup-winning Brazilian icon Romario.

However, Sterling is believed to have decided against making the move to South America.

The 31-year-old England international is without a club following an unhappy spell at Dutch side Feyenoord last season.

Leeds to reward Farke for PL turnaround

Leeds manager Daniel Farke is set to net himself a bumper pay rise at Elland Road.

The German is well into the final year of his four-year agreement with the Yorkshire side, whom he guided to a 14th place Premier League finish last season.

talkSPORT understands contract talks between Farke and the Leeds hierarchy are ongoing.

The German is ready to put pen to paper on a new long-term deal, rewarding him for stabilising Leeds back in the top-flight.
