Dodgers’ Dave Roberts reveals if Emmet Sheehan will earn another start after OKC call-up
The Los Angeles Dodgers made some changes to their starting rotation in the wake of Eric Lauer’s injury; the Dodgers placed Lauer on the 15-day injured list after he had suffered left elbow inflammation. They needed to call Emmet Sheehan back from Triple-A to make a start on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of their three-game set. He impressed in his return game, allowing just one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 in 5.2 innings of work.
Sheehan had been moving up and down the ladder following the Dodgers’ seismic trade for Tarik Skubal at the deadline. The Dodgers sent him down to the minors after acquiring Skubal, but they called him up in the middle of August to provide some bullpen help — only for LA to send him back down to the minor leagues so that he can get some reps as a starter.
Now that Sheehan is back in the big-league roster, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that the 26-year-old “is going to make another start” for the team, “likely Sunday in Miami” against the Marlins, according to Dodger Blue on X.
Sheehan becomes all the more important to the Dodgers especially following the unfortunate development that Shohei Ohtani will no longer be returning to the mound in 2026. He can soak up some innings, and get some development reps against some tough competition on the big-league level.
The 26-year-old has made 21 starts for the Dodgers this year, pitching in 101.0 innings. On the season thus far, he has an ERA of 5.08, although his peripherals suggest that he’s been somewhat unlucky on the mound.
Sheehan’s stuff can be eye-catching, as he’s striking out 10.5 batters per nine innings, but he’s been more home run prone than usual this year. Suffice to say, the Dodgers believe that he can improve further, and if the team were at full strength, he most likely is going to be either in a bullpen role or working on his game in the minors.
This is Sheehan’s chance to prove that there may be a role for him on the Dodgers’ MLB roster before the regular season is over.
