Club Brugge vs Aston Villa bet builder [6/1 odds]

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa bet builder [6/1 odds]

Aston Villa start their Champions League campaign in Bruges on Tuesday night and they arrive in a mess. Unai Emery’s side are winless in six games in all competitions, have not scored in three Premier League matches and managed a single shot on target at Hull City on Saturday.

Club Brugge, meanwhile, are the Belgian champions, have scored in 25 games on the spin and have turned the Jan Breydelstadion into one of the hardest grounds in Europe to win at.

I have built my bet builder around that home strength. It backs Brugge to avoid defeat, striker Nicolo Tresoldi to keep the shots flying and the hosts to test the Villa goalkeeper at least six times.

Club Brugge or draw

WHY: Brugge have lost just three of their last 22 European home matches, winning 13 and drawing six, so the double chance has landed in 19 of those 22 games.

They have also avoided defeat in six of their last seven Champions League home games, and that run includes results against Atletico Madrid, Inter, Arsenal, Barcelona and Monaco rather than a soft sample.

Villa know all about the Jan Breydelstadion too. Hans Vanaken’s goal beat them 1-0 here in the 2024/25 league phase and the same captain will lead the hosts out on Tuesday.

Villa’s start to the season makes this leg look even better. Four games without a win, a 4-0 hammering at Brighton, no goals in the league and an injury list that includes Amadou Onana, Johan Manzambi and Brian Madjo. Emery has a superb European record, but this Villa squad has had ten new signings and is still finding its feet.

I would much rather be on the settled home side.

KEY STAT: Club Brugge have avoided defeat in 19 of their last 22 European home games.

Nicolo Tresoldi 3+ shots

WHY: Tresoldi is the focal point of this Brugge attack and he shoots. His five league games this season have produced 3, 6, 4, 1 and 3 shots, so he has hit three or more in four of the five. That is 17 shots in five starts, an average of 3.4 a game and he has three goals to show for it.

He has started every match and played 431 minutes, so I am backing a guaranteed starter rather than hoping a bit-part player gets on.

He led Brugge with three Champions League goals last season and with Christos Tzolis sold to Arsenal, even more of the attacking burden sits with him. Villa have conceded five in three Premier League games and Ivan Leko will not change the aggressive front-foot approach that has served Brugge so well at home in Europe.

KEY STAT: Tresoldi has had 3+ shots in four of his five league games this season, averaging 3.4 shots a game.

Club Brugge 6+ shots on target

WHY: This is the leg that pushes the price out and the numbers behind it are excellent. Across their last seven Champions League home games Brugge have recorded 10, 5, 7, 6, 10, 16 and 9 shots on target.

That is six or more in six of the seven, an average of exactly nine a game and double figures in three of them. They have also scored three or more goals in six of those seven matches, so the shots are turning into chances and the chances are turning into goals.

Villa’s defence is not the unit it was either. Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez have both left, Zion Suzuki is a new goalkeeper still settling in and Emery is likely to rotate with Liverpool coming up at the weekend. Brugge at home, in front of their own fans, against a team low on confidence should get plenty of efforts on target.

KEY STAT: Club Brugge have had 6+ shots on target in six of their last seven Champions League home games.
