2 key Mammoth players likely to miss 1st round of postseason

The Utah Mammoth are preparing for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It is the first playoff berth in the history of the Mammoth, but an opponent for their first round of the playoffs has not yet been determined.

Now, it is being revealed that two key players are likely to miss the first round of the playoffs, according to Utah Mammoth insider Cole Bagley.

Barrett Hayton, who has not played since playing just 17 seconds against the Edmonton Oilers on March 24, has been dealing with an upper-body injury. He did take part in the morning skate on Tuesday, but he is still considered week-to-week. The center is part of the deep group of centers that the Mammoth have amassed, often playing on the second line with Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther. He has also been a solid scoring option for the team this year, finding the back of the net ten times with 15 helpers. Four of those goals, and two of the assists, have come on the powerplay.

Meanwhile, Jack McBain, another one of the centers for the Mammoth, has not played since April 2 against the Seattle Kraken. He has been playing on the third line, most recently with JJ Peterka and Michael Carcone. He has lit the lamp nine times, while adding 16 assists this season.

While both players are not primary scorer on the team, they are solid secondary options. Further, as the team gets ready for a postseason game, which is typically more physical, missing the 6-foot-4, 219 lbs center in McBain is a major blow.

The Mammoth, who are 43-32-6 on the year, are locked into the top wildcard spot in the Western Conference. If the Vegas Golden Knights defeat the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday night, or take the game to overtime, they will lock up the Pacific Division and be the opponent of the Mammoth. If the Golden Knights lose to the Kraken on Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers can win the division with a win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, which would set them up against the Mammoth.
