Zohran Mamdani reacts to viral ‘my mayor’s Muslim’ video after Knicks’ NBA championship

The New York Knicks took down the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, winning their first title in 53 years. Throughout the historic playoff run, New York fans have taken center stage. New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani reacted to his role in a “Knicks in 5” rhyme that has gone viral.

“He is a New Yorker whose words have really stayed with all of us,” Mamdani said of the ‘Knicks in 5’ poet. “Thanks to him, there have been a lot of people running up to me over the last few weeks just shouting ‘My Mayor’s Muslim!’ I said, ‘It’s true, I am!'”

“I think it speaks to what this city is, and even this team. It’s not just a cookie cutout of the same thing again and again; it’s every single player having a role, bringing together all five boroughs for this moment. It’s truly a joy,” the mayor continued.

Mamdani was the opening line for a Knicks in 4 rhyme that went viral after the ‘Bockers took a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals. “My Mayor’s Muslim/My bagels Jewish/My Christian Dior/Knicks in 4,” was the mantra. Then, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs took Game 3 at MSG. That’s when the Pope got involved in the prophetic chant.

The Knicks won all three games they played in San Antonio during the NBA Finals. But that did not stop the fans from pouring out onto the streets and celebrating before, during, and after games. Saturday night was a long one in all five boroughs, but it was one 53 years in the making.

The Knicks, Mamdani, and the fans will cap the celebration with a parade up Broadway on Thursday, ending at City Hall.
