DeMarcus Lawrence nearly retired after Seahawks’ dominant Super Bowl run

It was a storybook season for the Seattle Seahawks in 2025, who not only captured first place in the NFC West Division standings with a pristine 14-3 record, but later defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, earning the second title in franchise history.

Now, their title defense is in full swing, as the players have gathered for the start of Training Camp. And among them is linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence, who is entering his 13th season and second with the Seahawks. However, Lawrence recently admitted that following Seattle’s Super Bowl victory, he gave serious consideration to hanging up the cleats and retiring from the NFL.

“I was very close,” Lawrence said via MyNorthwest.com. “Went through a long offseason of going back and forth – am I going to retire, am I not?

“I think the one thing that held me steady is… it’s easy to take over a kingdom,” he continued. “But the hard part is when you’ve got the kingdom and now it’s time to defend it. Are you going to sit back and eat the fruits of your labor? Or are you gonna start building up your walls and making sure everything is structurally prepared to defend it? I didn’t want to go out on an easy way. I wanted to make sure I go out on top with a bang to let the whole world know this wasn’t some facade – this was something real.”

Lawrence, who was taken in the second round (34th overall pick) of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, joined Seattle before last season with a three-year, $42 million deal.
