Neemias Queta won’t splurge $100,000 to train with NBA legend

Many NBA players spend part of their offseason working with Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon, who has become one of basketball’s most sought-after post-play instructors. But Boston Celtics center Neemias Queta isn’t interested in spending six figures for the opportunity.

In an interview with A Bola, Queta was asked whether his new contract would make him more willing to spend $100,000 to train with Olajuwon for a week.

“With the new salary coming up, would it be easier to spend $100,000 [€88,000] to train for a week with Hakeem Olajuwon on post movements? Is that something you would like to do?”

Queta’s response was brief, “I’m cheap.”

When asked if he would spend the money even to work with Olajuwon, Queta doubled down, “Not even with Hakeem Olajuwon.”

Although he won’t be making that investment, Queta said he’s still focused on improving several aspects of his game ahead of the 2026-27 season.

“Defensively, I’m working hard on switching [players in movement and blocking] and being more able to hold my own against smaller players in one-on-one situations without help. I feel confident in that aspect; you can always be more comfortable. Offensively, it’s about having the ball in my hands. Being able to have tighter ball control, being able to create one-on-one situations in the low post, spacing the field, having a more consistent shot, and having a greater offensive impact.”

Rather than paying for specialized offseason instruction, Queta believes he can continue developing those skills through his own work and the Celtics’ player development program. The 27-year-old also reflected on the four-year, $56 million contract extension he signed with Boston, saying the long-term commitment meant more to him than the financial value of the deal.

“Yes, for me, the money wasn’t the most important thing at all. The most important thing was knowing that Boston believed in me for another four years. I’ll be able to continue calling Boston home for that entire time, without having to look over my shoulder. Without having to worry about the next season. What I wanted or what would happen. There’s uncertainty when you’re a free agent. It creates certain difficulties in terms of knowing how to manage the year, injuries and everything else, and I didn’t want to be thinking about that. It was very good for me and I feel flattered to have that confidence from the front office.”

With his long-term future now secured, Queta is focused on continuing to expand his game as he looks to carve out a larger role in Boston’s frontcourt.
