Vikings’ Kyler Murray, JJ McCarthy show up-and-down signs on training camp day 1

The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition is officially underway, and Day 1 of training camp offered exactly what fans should have expected. Some flashes. Some mistakes. And plenty of intrigue.

According to Vikings writer Will Ragatz, both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy had encouraging moments during Wednesday’s practice while also showing there’s still work to be done.

Thought it was a solid day for both QBs. Some impressive Murray throws, some misses (including a James Pierre pick). McCarthy can really rip it, but still waiting to see the layered throws.

Murray’s NFL experience remains his biggest advantage. The veteran has made Pro Bowls, won games at the highest level, and understands what it takes to command an offense. It’s no surprise that many expect him to enter Week 1 as Minnesota’s starting quarterback.

But McCarthy isn’t going away quietly. The young quarterback continues to showcase the arm talent that made him such an intriguing prospect. His ability to drive the football stands out, even if he’s still developing the touch and anticipation needed to consistently complete more difficult throws over the middle.

Training camp is just beginning, and both quarterbacks will have multiple opportunities to separate themselves throughout practices and preseason games. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has the luxury of evaluating every aspect of the competition before naming a starter.

Murray may still be the favorite because of his experience, but McCarthy has enough talent to keep the pressure on throughout camp. If Day 1 was any indication, this competition is far from over, and it could become one of the defining storylines of the NFL preseason.
