Yankees’ unreal inning leads to never-before-seen AL feat

The New York Yankees beat the Athletics 13-8 on Sunday to take the series in Sacramento. Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento has been hitter-friendly since the A’s moved there, but Sunday was historic. The Yankees scored all 13 of their runs in the 3rd inning, making American League history in the process.

“Yankees are the first team in American League history to score 13+ runs in one game, all in one inning. It has happened twice in the National League: 1972 Braves, 2003 Phillies,” Jomboy Media’s Talkin’ Yanks X page posted.

The Yankees scored ten runs before recording an out in the third inning, tacking on three more after Paul Goldschmidt struck out. They batted around twice exactly, with 18 batters coming to the plate. Trent Grisham made the last out of the second inning, hit a two-run single, and then made the last out of the third inning.

Even more incredibly, the Yankees scored all of those runs without hitting a home run. Ben Rice came the closest, banging a ball off the wall for a two-run triple. The Athletics went through three pitchers in the inning, with Jacob Lopez not recording an out in the inning, Michael Kelly allowing six runs and recording two outs, and Jack Perkins finishing it off.

The Athletics started the third inning up 3-0 and, over 40 minutes later, were down by ten runs. Will Warren went six innings and allowed no earned runs, with those first three runs coming after a Grisham error. The Yankees’ bullpen was not great, with both Tim Hill and Fernando Cruz letting up multiple runs. But the third inning was so dominant, it did not matter.

The Yankees finish the road trip 5-1 after sweeping the Kansas City Royals. They head back to The Bronx for three massive games against the Cleveland Guardians starting on Tuesday with Cam Schlittler on the hill.
