Yankees sign pitcher in extremely underrated move

The New York Yankees signed right-handed pitcher Chien-Fan Lai on Tuesday, the team announced. It is a move that may not receive too much attention, but it should not be overlooked. Lai was the highest-rated Taiwanese pitcher of the 2026 class. He was not drafted and the Yankees signed him as a free agent. The 18-year-old pitcher is set to report to the Yankees’ Dominican Summer League Academy.

His fastball has reached up to 95 MPH. He throws a curveball and a changeup as well. He could add a fourth pitch at some point in the future. He could join Chien-Ming Wang as Taiwanese players to reach the big leagues with the Yankees. Wang pitched for the Yankees from 2005-2009 and finished second in American League Cy Young voting in 2006 after pitching to a 3.63 ERA and winning a league leading 19 games.

Lai is hoping to find success as well with New York. At only 18 years old, he is likely at least a few years away from earning an MLB promotion. He features a high ceiling, however, and Lai could certainly make a significant impact down the road. This signing could prove to be extremely underrated in the future.

Yankees’ current situation

The Yankees are currently in first place in the American League East standings. New York features a talented overall roster. Nevertheless, this Yankees team could still make some trades before the deadline.

The ball club’s roster is arguably already deep enough to win the American League, but a potential 2024 World Series rematch with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the ’26 Fall Classic is surely something they are considering. Upgrading the roster in a potential trade or two may be a good idea.

For now, New York is focused on its upcoming matchup against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night at 6:40 PM EST.
