Yankees’ Max Fried lands on IL but avoids worst-case scenario

Fans of the New York Yankees held their collective breath when starter Max Fried departed Wednesday’s start against the Baltimore Orioles after just three innings, during which he allowed three runs on five hits and a walk, due to left elbow posterior soreness.

As speculation grew about the possible severity of his ailment, it appears as though the verdict is in.

According to MLB Insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Fried is now on the 15-day IL, but he’s not expected to need surgery and should be able to return at some point this season.

“Yankees ace Max Fried goes on the 15-day IL with a left elbow bone bruise,” Nightengale wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “He will undergo another MRI in a few weeks to determine when he can resume throwing again. The good news is that no surgery is needed and Fried is expected to return at some point this season.”

Following Wednesday’s game, Fried indicated that he wasn’t concerned about the possibility of a lengthy absence from the mound.

“I guess you never know, but I’m definitely planning on this being sooner rather than later,” Fried said via MIL.com. “I don’t want to put any timelines or anything like that. I’m not too worried about a super long-term thing. If I can, I would love to be able to make my next start, but we’ll see.”

Last year, Fried made a career-high 32 starts and posted a 19-5 record and a 2.86 ERA, leading the American League in wins. So far this season, Fried is 4-3 with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.
