Yankees’ Gerrit Cole injury rehab assignment move suggests return may be near
The New York Yankees teased a Gerrit Cole return from his Tommy John surgery last Saturday. Will manager Aaron Boone and company welcome back their star on the mound soon?
The franchise unveiled where things stand for the pitcher on Saturday afternoon.
“Today, the Yankees transferred the rehab assignment of RHP Gerrit Cole from Double-A Somerset to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,” the Yankees announced via the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
The news sparks a welcoming sign for the Yankees. Cole indeed is right on track for his majors return.
Fans itching to see their ace return to hill likely must wait at least two games. Which is often standard protocol for players returning from injury in the Double-A realm.
The 35-year-old attacked his rehab cautiously. Cole revealed that he changed his windup delivery amid his MLB Injury. The new pitching method involved spending time with a Yankees physical therapy and rehab coordinator.
“Just throwing the ball with Joe Bello all last summer, just doing this, and it felt kinda good,” Cole told reporters back on April 29. “Keeps the rhythm going, I got a lot of positive feedback, you know? People like it.”
He added how he enjoyed the rhythm of his new windup.
“I think it keeps the tempo of the delivery kind of upbeat and fluid,” Cole added.
Cole hasn’t seen action with the Yanks since 2024. He’s not the only Yankee attempting a comeback to the roster. Carlos Rodon is another on the same path to return to New York. The Yankees are currently 28-17 overall and second in the American League East.
