Tony Mowbray demands answers from PGMOL over late decision after storming down tunnel in disgust
Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray will speak to the PGMOL after Wolves snatched a 2-2 draw thanks to a controversial late penalty.
The 62-year-old was left furious as his side were denied an opening three points on Friday night by Raul Jimenez’s last-gasp spot-kick.
Jimenez scored on his return to Molineux in the third minute of stoppage time to claim a point for the relegated side against Blackburn.
Marshall Munetsi had put Wolves in front after 18 minutes, but goals from Sean McLoughlin and Andri Gudjohnsen turned things around for the visitors, who have been tipped for relegation this season.
They then managed to hold on to their lead for the entire second half, looking set to shock the former Premier League outfit.
However, in the dying seconds of the match, a cross struck Ryan Alebiosu, and the ball bounced back off his arm.
Referee Farai Hallam pointed to the penalty spot, with replays showing that Alebiosu was right on the edge of the box.
The Blackburn full-back’s body was outside the area, but his arm seemed to have been inside, according to the officials.
The decision left manager Mowbray raging on the touchline, while Jimenez then went on to bring the game level.
Moments later, the full-time whistle blew and the points were shared, but Mowbray remained angry and stormed down the tunnel.
How did Mowbray react at full time?
During talkSPORT’s commentary of the game, presenter Adrian Durham explained: “Tony Mowbray couldn’t stop shaking his head after that penalty was given.
“He’s shaking hands with the opposition’s dugout and then gone straight down the tunnel.
“[He] told one of his staff to take the players over to the fans away to our left. They’ve moved the away ends away to our left here, and he’s gone straight down the tunnel to the dressing room.
“Tony Mowbray can’t believe how that game has finished up.”
What has Mowbray said about the penalty?
The Blackburn boss seemed to have calmed down by the time he spoke to the media post-match, but he still wasn’t happy.
In fact, he admitted to talkSPORT that he will be going to speak to the PGMOL’s Select Group 2 Manager, Kevin Friend, who oversees refereeing in the Championship, to question the decision.
“We’re obviously disappointed,” Mowbray told talkSPORT. “Having watched the still back, when it hits his hand it looks as if it’s outside the box, the still I’ve just looked at.
“And I think we’ll go and see Kevin Friend, who is here tonight, who is the assessor. We’ll go and sit with the referee and see what he thought.
“If it’s in the 93rd minute, you have to be 100 per cent sure. These lads train and work every day, this is their lives, this is what they do for a living and you have to get it right I think.
“And the still I’ve seen looks to me outside the box and yet there you go. He made the call, we have to live with it.
“At 2-2, would we have taken that before the game? I generally thought we could come here and win, but they are a decent side, a good side who play positional football.”
Mowbray added: “I’m pleased for our supporters who made the trip today and that they saw a team fighting for the victory.
“And unfortunately it was taken away from us right at the death, but we put the point in the bag and we move on.”
Blackburn have to settle for just the one point to start the season, but there were certainly some encouraging signs.
Next up for Rovers are Middlesbrough at Ewood Park next week, while Wolves travel to take on Preston North End.
