WWE legend John Cena drops cryptic ‘Stone Cold’ tease for ‘history-making’ Backlash announcement

Is there a chance that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is returning to WWE during John Cena’s upcoming announcement at Backlash? It appears so.

Cena promised that he had a “history-making” development in store for Backlash on Saturday, May 9, 2026. In his latest tease, he promised it was a “Stone Cold Special Announcement.”

The picture itself was of the Backlash logo with two hands grabbing each other. He didn’t provide a caption, so it left fans to speculate.

“If it’s about Club WWE imma crash out,” one fan reacted, while another pessimistic fan commented, “SPOILER: It will be a disappointing announcement.”

Less than a month after hosting WrestleMania 42, Cena is back in WWE. He will return for Backlash in an undisclosed role. When announcing the news, Cena claimed he was “SO excited to break some history-making news!”

He didn’t specify what the news was regarding, though he conceded that he “can’t promise it’ll be perfect,” though “it will change the WWE experience for Superstars and fans!”

It sounds like the announcement has been a long time coming, as Cena said he’s announcing it “after months of planning and effort.”

The upcoming Backlash PLE is set to take place on May 9, 2026, in Tampa, Florida, at the Benchmark International Arena. It will air on ESPN’s streaming service, and the first hour will be simulcast on ESPN2.

Currently, five matches are announced for the show. Roman Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship in the probable main event against Jacob Fatu.

Additionally, former Vision stablemates Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker will have the first singles match of their feud. Trick Williams will defend the United States Championship against Sami Zayn, while Iyo Sky and Asuka will square off in a singles match.

Lastly, Danhausen has a tag team match against The Miz and Kit Wilson. However, the match is contingent on him finding a partner.
