Reds add ex-Yankees reliever after sweeping the Athletics

The Cincinnati Reds added bullpen depth Thursday by claiming right-hander Ron Marinaccio off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The move came the same afternoon Cincinnati completed a three-game sweep of the Athletics.

Marinaccio, 31, gives the Reds a reliever capable of working multiple innings. He spent his first three major league seasons with the New York Yankees before joining the San Diego Padres in 2025 and splitting this season between San Diego and Pittsburgh.

The right-hander posted a 4.79 ERA with 38 strikeouts across 33 appearances for the Padres before the Pirates acquired him July 23 for considerations related to the international signing bonus pool. Marinaccio owns a 3.60 career ERA in 145 major league appearances.

With San Diego, he frequently worked beyond a single inning, giving Cincinnati a reliever accustomed to handling extended assignments.

The Reds also claimed right-hander Chase Solesky off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays and optioned him to Triple-A Louisville. The Reds transferred outfielder Blake Dunn to the 60-day injured list to create room on the 40-man roster.

Solesky adds organizational depth after making his debut with Tampa Bay this season.

Marinaccio does not have any minor league options remaining, meaning the Reds must place him on their active roster when he reports. His experience and ability to cover multiple innings could provide flexibility for the Reds bullpen down the stretch.

The Reds completed their sweep Thursday with a 6-5 victory at Great American Ball Park. The Reds hit four home runs and held off an A’s rally in the ninth inning to secure their third straight win.

The victory improved the club to 56-58 and 13-6 since the All-Star break. Thursday’s victory also extended the Athletics’ losing streak to eight games. The waiver claims give the club two different forms of pitching depth as they continue the season. Marinaccio brings major league experience, while Solesky gives the organization another option at Triple-A if the pitching staff needs reinforcements later this year.
