Wisconsin adds potential John Blackwell replacement via transfer portal
Wisconsin basketball awaits where John Blackwell lands in 2026-27, whether if it’s the NBA Draft or another college. But the Badgers appear to have his replacement already lined up via the College Basketball Transfer Portal.
The Big Ten power landed Trey Autry out of George Washington University, with Nick Osen of 247Sports confirming the move Thursday night.
The shooter Blackwell remains one of the nation’s most coveted transfers. The 6-foot-4 junior hit an average of 19.1 points per game during the March Madness run. Blackwell even lit up Final Four representative Illinois for 31 points during the conference tournament. Wisconsin and Blackwell eliminated that Illini in the Big Ten semifinals before watching Illinois go on its run.
Blackwell is now hunted by some big name universities since his portal entry. Duke represents a strong suitor for Blackwell. Big 12 champion Arizona rises as one more possibility for the past Badgers star. Even Wisconsin’s rival Illinois heated up its recruitment of Blackwell this week.
Autry, however, enters the picture to help compensate for Blackwell’s departure. He’s another 6-foot-4 talent who leaves his university after wrapping up his junior campaign.
Autry produced quieter results scoring wise compared to Blackwell, averaging only 11 points per game. But he delivered 19 points against NCAA Tournament team Saint Louis on March 13. He also dropped 24 on Richmond Univerity for the Revolutionaries.
He guided GWU to the National Invitational Tournament after finishing the regular season with an 18-15 mark. New Mexico ended the Revolutionaries’ season with a 86-61 trouncing on March 22. Now Autry surfaces as the first replacement for Blackwell.
