Deion Sanders opens up about adjusting to life after bladder cancer surgery

Deion Sanders is sharing how he is getting to know his new bladder after cancer surgery last year.

The Colorado football head coach made an appearance on “The Basement with Tim Ross” podcast last week, where he reiterated why his partnership with Depends is vital to his recovery.

“I am dead serious. I depend on Depend,” Sanders said. “You have no idea. I’m sitting up there in the bed, I can’t control. I got to know. The bladder don’t know me. I don’t know it. We just get to know each other.”

In July 2025, Depends — a disposable adult incontinence and bladder leakage products brand — announced their partnership with Sanders after giving the company a shoutout for being helpful in his recovery process.

Sanders shared that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer last year at a press conference. He has since been open about his struggles since his surgery last year.

“I was fighting,” he told the AP. “I was walking out on the property with a bag of blood and also urine and trying to get back. But this expedited the process. Last year at this time I was in a whole different place, and I’m just thankful.”

In an appearance on Good Morning America in June, he shared that he was “cancer-free” and opened up about his cancer journey and his future.

“I’m healthy. I got my health back. I got my swagger back,” he told former NFL player Michael Strahan. “I got my ‘me’ back. Last year at this time, I’m fighting cancer, I didn’t know which way it was going to go.”

Sanders continued: “I’m thankful that we fought the battle, and we won the battle fighting cancer. It was a tremendous and tumultuous battle, and I’m thankful to be sitting here right now.”

College football season is fast approaching, and Colorado will have its first game of the season on Sept. 3 against Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. ET.
