TCU’s Sonny Dykes states obvious after taking inexcusable L to Bill Belichick, North Carolina
The TCU football team got the 2026 season started on the wrong foot in Ireland. TCU dropped a pivotal non-conference game to North Carolina. Horned Frogs head coach Sonny Dykes made an obvious statement after losing the game.
“They’ve improved,” Dykes said of North Carolina, per ESPN.
North Carolina avenged a bad loss they suffered last season against TCU. That set the tone for the rest of the year, as the Tar Heels went just 4-8 under head coach Bill Belichick in 2025.
Things were far different this season, as North Carolina won the game 15-10.
“We got used to the speed of it,” Belichick said of this year’s TCU game.
The loss was tough for TCU, who had opportunities to win the game. TCU was without a key wide receiver, who is dealing with an injury. The game was played in Dublin in front of countless American football fans.
North Carolina’s defense locked down TCU after the Horned Frogs jumped out to a 10-3 lead.
“We know what they’re doing, they know what we’re doing, so it’s just beat them off the ball and make the play,” North Carolina defensive tackle Xavier Lewis said.
This is a pivotal year for North Carolina football. Belichick is under fire after struggling through the 2025 season. Ahead of the 2026 campaign, some analysts felt his seat was on fire. A win over TCU certainly helps his team’s confidence.
TCU must now battle back from the loss. The Horned Frogs also expect success this season under Dykes. Dykes’ TCU program has struggled somewhat since the team made an appearance in the College Football Playoff, during the 2022 season.
TCU now moves on to play Grambling State on September 12.
