Jaguars cut Nick Mullens after making Quinn Ewers trade

The Jacksonville Jaguars were a surprisingly good team in 2025. Remember, they almost took out the Bills in the playoffs last season. Now the Jaguars are consolidating talent at the quarterback position just before the 2026 regular season.

The Jaguars are releasing veteran quarterback Nick Mullens on Sunday, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Jacksonville makes the move just one day after acquiring Quinn Ewers from the Dolphins.

Multiple NFL teams still need a backup quarterback ahead of the regular season. It will be interesting to see if Mullens lands another backup job in the next few days.

Mullens has not played significant snaps during the regular season since 2023. He played in five games for the Vikings that year, putting up 1,306 passing yards with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. Minnesota went 1-4 during their stretch with Mullens as their starter in 2023.

As for the Jaguars, parting ways with Mullens made too much sense after adding Ewers.

Ewers is a big upgrade over Mullens and should make Jacksonville feel comfortable about their depth at quarterback. The former Longhorn played well during his rookie campaign despite playing on a dreadful Dolphins squad. Ewers logged 622 passing yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions in four games last year.

Jacksonville can reasonably expect to get more out of Ewers than Miami did. The Jaguars have better infrastructure in place than the Dolphins do, including head coach Liam Coen. He is a fabled “quarterback whisperer” who should help Ewers develop into a solid backup quarterback.

The Jaguars also have Carter Bradley under contract as their QB3. It will be interesting to see if he survives final roster cuts, which takes place later this afternoon.

Regardless, fans should feel comfortable that their team has a plan in case Trevor Lawrence gets hurt.

The Jaguars begin the regular season with a home game against the Browns. That AFC contest kicks off at 1PM ET on September 13th from EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville.
