Will Celtics give Jaylen Brown $141 million contract extension after offering him in Giannis trade?
After the Boston Celtics’ unsuccessful attempt to acquire Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst predicts that a strong trade market may develop for Jaylen Brown. Boston’s aggressive offer, which centered around the Finals MVP and two future first-round picks, fell short when the Bucks opted to trade the two-time MVP to the Miami Heat instead.
Windhorst noted that by making Brown available, Boston publicly signaled he could be traded, likely igniting an intense bidding war among teams interested in acquiring the star forward.
With Antetokounmpo heading to Miami, a significant question now looms over Boston’s front office. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Celtics are under no immediate pressure to move Brown, as he remains under contract for the next three seasons.
However, the front office faces the delicate task of repairing any damage to Brown’s relationship with the team caused by the trade talks. Remarkably, this is the second time in four years that Brown has been involved in major trade discussions, following the Kevin Durant sweepstakes in 2022.
Marks emphasizes that while Brown becomes eligible for his lucrative $141 million extension starting July 26, Boston’s primary offseason priority is to strengthen its frontcourt, likely requiring a different trade instead of relying on free agency.
Ultimately, the blockbuster deal collapsed due to hesitations from Bucks co-owner and Cleveland Browns majority owner Jimmy Haslam. Haunted by previous high-profile sports controversies, including issues involving superstars like Myles Garrett, Haslam was reluctant to face another prolonged player discontent crisis.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, Haslam preferred Pat Riley’s safer package from Miami over Boston’s offer due to uncertainty about whether Brown genuinely wanted a long-term commitment in Milwaukee, as he aimed to avoid another trade request debacle and the accompanying media scrutiny.
