Jahmyr Gibbs went from living in homeless shelter and adoption at 15 to NFL’s highest paid running back

Jahmyr Gibbs got a well-deserved payday.

His agent, Todd Frances, was first to reveal that Gibbs and the Detroit Lions had agreed on a three-year, $75.75M extension, with $51.5 million guaranteed.

It’s a deal that makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history – a mark that had already been broken earlier in a big money week for the NFL.

On Tuesday, the Atlanta Falcons agreed to a three-year contract extension with Bijan Robinson, worth up to $75m, with $51m guaranteed – and after that Jonathan Taylor followed with a $44million, two year deal with the Colts.

Gibbs’ extension is well deserved. The Lions 12th overall draft pick in 2023 has been unstoppable since stepping into the NFL.

In his three years, the 24-year-old has accumulated 3,580 yards with 39 touchdowns. He has added 1,449 yards and 10 more scores through the air.

Just like his routes, Gibbs’ journey to the top of his position was not a straight line.

Gibbs’ journey from homeless shelter to NFL stardom

Gibbs’ childhood wasn’t the kind you would expect from a future NFL star.

Instability at home saw the future Lions star and his grandmother, Angela Willis, spend a period of time living in Family Promise, a homeless shelter in Georgia.

It was here were we would meet Grey and Dusty Rose, who worked as volunteers at the shelter, and would later adopt Gibbs at 15-years-old.

Upon joining the Rose family, who had three biological children of their own, a foundation for him to chase his dreams was born.

He attended Dalton High School in Georgia, where he became a standout national recruit and finished his high school career with 4,882 rushing yards and 70 touchdowns.

Gibbs, a three-star recruit out of Dalton, sidestepped offers from Michigan, Texas A&M and North Carolina to stay in Georgia.

After establishing himself as one of college football‘s premier all-purpose weapons through two explosive seasons at Georgia Tech before ending his career as an All-SEC star for Alabama Crimson Tide.

“Jah came from a broken home, so I always wanted him to be around good people and to know that every home isn’t a broken home,” Willis, told the Dalton Daily Citizen in 2018.

“There’s stuff that can happen that can make you go in the other direction because of things that happened in your life.

“I’m just so proud of him. The big almighty has a plan for him. I’m so proud of the man he’s become.

“A lot of people don’t know what he’s been through.”

For Gibbs, who once faced unimaginable hardship, becoming the highest-paid running back in NFL history is far more than a financial milestone.

It’s a testament to the resilience that has defined his entire life.
