UFC star’s brother pulled from Las Vegas card this weekend due to medical advice

Jessie Rosas, the older brother of Raul Rosas Jr, is out of his scheduled UFC debut this weekend due to a facial injury.

Rosas was meant to fight Miles Johns in his first promotional appearance at UFC Vegas 120, also known as UFC Fight Night 284, on Saturday.

However, Rosas Jr, who became the youngest UFC fighter in history at 18 in 2022 and later the youngest to ever enter the promotion’s rankings aged 21, revealed on Thursday that his brother had been pulled.

And the reason the Mexican bantamweight is no longer competing on the Fight Night card is quite unusual.

Rosas out of UFC Vegas due to ‘scratch’

“UFC doctor pulled my brother out of his fight,” Rosas Jr wrote to his 1.5 million followers on Instagram.

“Due to a glove scratch on his forehead, as he believes it’s an infection.

“We did what we could, got approval from two doctors, everything was OK, but the UFC doctor made the call.

“There’s nothing we can do, my brother was ready.

“Things happen for a reason. God’s plan. His time will come.”

A photo later posted by Rosas Jr showed himself training alongside his brother in Sin City, but there will be no fight week for the pair.

In good news, the man Rosas was meant to fight, Johns, still has a place on the card.

Gianni Vasquez, who only made his UFC debut in February, has stepped in to fight the Texas native on just one days’ notice.

He weighed in at 143lbs on Friday as his fight against Johns, who tipped the scales at 145.5lbs, is now being contested in the featherweight division.

Elsewhere on the fight night card in Las Vegas, both Mateusz Gamrot and Quillan Salkilld made weight on Friday ahead of their top-ranked lightweight main event.

Australian fan-favourite Salkilld has surged to the UFC rankings in the last year, winning all five of his fights in the promotion and collecting four bonuses along the way.

Last time out, Salkilld knocked out perennial contender Beneil Dariush in one round, not long after a viral head-kick stoppage of Nasrat Haqparast.

Gamrot, meanwhile, bounced back from a tough defeat to Charles Oliveira in Rio by submitting Esteban Ribovics last time out at UFC 327.

‘Gamer’ has been at the peak of his power for many years now and will be out to cement his No. 6 lightweight ranking in Sin City this weekend.

The card also features the return of British heavyweight Louie Sutherland.

He is searching for his second UFC win after securing his first against Tai Tuivasa in May.
