Dwayne Johnson breaks silence on live-action Moana’s box office flop, brutal reviews

Not every project can be a winner, as the live-action Moana movie was a critical failure, getting scathing reviews and being a box office flop — and Maui actor Dwayne Johnson has reacted.

Speaking to People, Johnson recalled seeing the first two reviews of the remake, which were “amazing.” However, this set his expectations up for failure, as the rest “went another way.” The Rock knows that this “sometimes happens” in the business.

Either way, he has no hard feelings whether or not you enjoyed the remake, saying, “If you love it, great. If you don’t, no problem.” He said that what “really mattered” was that “the culture really stood up.” Ultimately, that is the reason he made the movie.

“Because of me and our kids who can now look at the big screen and go, ‘That’s us for the first time on a big screen. That’s us up there. How cool is that?”

Dwayne Johnson’s live-action Moana movie was a flop all around

The live-action remake of Moana has been divisive among reviews. It currently holds a 31% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences have given it an 88%.

To date, it has only grossed $264 million worldwide. The project cost $250 million to make, so that has not been a good turnout for the blockbuster film.

It’s especially disappointing considering the success of the two animated projects. The first Moana (released in 2016) made over $643 million worldwide on a $175 million budget. Its sequel, which came out eight years later, made over $1 billion on a $150 million budget.

Whether or not the live-action Moana receives a sequel is unknown. However, it would take a miracle for it to turn a profit for Disney.

Johnson was one of the lone actors to return from the animated movies. He reprised his role as Maui. Catherine Laga’aia assumed the title role from Auli’i Cravalho.
