Blue Jays call up prospect picked up in Kevin Gausman trade

With the Toronto Blue Jays being in last place in the AL East, the front office decided to be sellers at the trade deadline. The club acquired two exciting prospects in a deal that sent right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs. On Friday, one of those prospects got the call to the majors.

Reports indicate that Brett Bateman, a speedy defensive outfielder, was called up to the majors by the Blue Jays, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. The 24-year-old will make his major league debut on Friday, batting ninth in the order in Toronto’s matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies.

“News: The Blue Jays have called up OF Brett Bateman, who they acquired from the Cubs in the Kevin Gausman deal,” Matheson reported. “Very talented defender with speed in centre. Offensively, it’s a contact and on-base profile, not power.”

Bateman played 84 games at the Triple-A level this season (two at Triple-A Buffalo) before getting the call to MLB. As Matheson stated, the former eighth-round pick is more of a contact hitter who specializes in getting on base and utilizes speed to help on offense and defense. Through 293 at-bats in the minors this year, Bateman has totaled 91 hits, three home runs, and 33 RBIs, giving him a .311 batting average and .429 OBP.

He’s also managed to record 20 stolen bases in Triple-A, making him a serious threat on the base paths. Brett Bateman will have a chance to flash his potential for the Blue Jays with just two months remaining in the regular season.
