Reds’ Hunter Greene receives elbow surgery update

Cincinnati Reds star pitcher Hunter Greene is going to have elbow surgery, Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said Friday via Pat Brennan of the Enquirer. Greene was recently placed on the injured list due to an elbow injury. The chances of Greene pitching again this season appeared to be slim after the injury news was announced. While his timeline remains uncertain even after this elbow surgery update, it remains unlikely that the right-handed starter will throw another pitch this season.

“New on Reds from Nick Krall: Hunter Greene will have right elbow surgery around the ligament after seeking second opinion. Extent/specifics of the surgery won’t be known until the operation begins,” Brennan reported.

Greene, 27, missed the beginning of the season due to injury as well. He returned and pitched to a 6.83 ERA across five starts before suffering an injury once again.

It is certainly unfortunate for Greene, who is one of the better pitchers in baseball. He turned in a 2.75 ERA in 2024 and a 2.76 ERA last year. In 2024, Greene earned an All-Star selection and finished eighth in National League Cy Young voting.

The Reds are set to begin a three-game series against the Nationals on the road on Friday night. Cincinnati will attempt to play well and earn a victory despite being without the star pitcher due to injury.
