Radio announcer wants Red Sox to lay ground for Mets comeback

The New York Mets just swept the Cleveland Guardians, moving to 50-66 on the season. They sold pieces at the trade deadline and are still 11 games out of the final Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are blistering hot, which gives Mets radio announcer Howie Rose some hope.

“Last week of June: Yankees 15 games ahead of Red Sox in loss column. The two teams are now tied in loss column. Sox are half-game behind. All in 6 weeks,” sportswriter Mike Lupica posted on X, summarizing Boston’s epic run.

Rose responded, “So you’re saying the Mets aren’t cooked yet?”

The Mets have just a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. Even after their three wins in Cleveland, their first road sweep of the season, the math is not in their favor. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have risen from an 8.4% chance on June 21 to a 96% chance after Thursday’s 13-inning classic.

The Red Sox have won 31 of their last 36 games to launch themselves back into contention. The Mets have just 46 games left on the season, so they have to get started now. If their three wins against the Guardians start the identical streak, New York would be 78-71 with 13 games to go.

The chances that that happens for the Mets are incredibly slim, especially considering Juan Soto’s injury. They have been without the superstar since July 24 due to a Grade 2 calf strain. If Soto comes back and the Mets are still hot, maybe they can make a Red Sox-esque run.

The Mets face the Pittsburgh Pirates for three games starting on Friday.
