Cowboys’ Caleb Downs is already getting Defensive Rookie of the Year hype

The Dallas Cowboys have always had an offense that can score with the best of them, but it’s the defense that’s always been in catch-up mode. They made sure to change that narrative this offseason, whether it was hiring Christian Parker as the defensive coordinator or adding some high-impact players on that side of the ball.

In the draft, they selected Caleb Downs with the 11th pick, and he is slated to be a game-changer in his rookie season. People outside of the Cowboys are expecting big things from Downs, and he’s already getting Defensive Rookie of the Year hype.

“I think that the Cowboys are gonna have a really good offense,” Tim Hasselback said on Get Up. “I think they’re gonna be much improved on defense, and because of where he plays, meaning he’s a safety, he’ll find himself in the box at times; he’ll be in coverage. I think just the nature of the position is he’s going to have a light shining on him.

“He’s already a really good football player. I do think that a lot of factors coming in make sense, where he’ll be an impact player on a high-profile team and have a very good chance to be Defensive Rookie of the Year.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Downs was in the talks for the award this upcoming season, but it may come down to how successful the defense is in general. They’re hoping that this is one of their best years on that side of the ball in a long time, and they have the players to do so.

If they can have a solid defensive unit paired with the high expectations of the offense, the Cowboys could be one of the better teams in the league this season.
