Why Seahawks’ Sam Darnold is still ‘kinda bummed’ about Super Bowl despite dominant victory

While Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darold ponders what he will make with his next contract, he gave a little shoutout to a former team. However, Darnold said he’s still “kinda bummed” about the Super Bowl despite the team’s dominant victory, according to NBC Sports.

“I didn’t play great in the Super Bowl,” Darnold said. “I missed way too many throws. We still won, our defense balled out, and I didn’t turn the ball over, which helped. But dude, to win the Super Bowl that way, I was kinda bummed. I want to score like 40 points, you know what I mean? I want to go out there and ball out. And it’s just, dang, I didn’t play my best football in the Super Bowl? That sucks.”

Darnold completed only 50% of his passes (19 of 38) while throwing for 202 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks routed the Patriots, 29-13.

It’s interesting because most players — whether honestly or not — will say they don’t care how they played as long as the team won. Darnold is taking what looks like a me-first journey. He’s unhappy with how he played, and cares about it, even though the team won.

In one sense, it’s refreshing because it seems more honest than the canned version usually delivered after a victory.

Darnold said he missed a wide-open Jaxon Smith-Njigba early in the game that could have been a touchdown. He said he also missed throws to Rashid Shaheed and Cooper Kupp.

“How am I gonna miss these throws right now?” Darnold said. “Are you kidding me?”

Maybe Darnold can better enjoy the Super Bowl victory after he retires. He’s an eight-year veteran who has only had two seasons of starting a full 17-game schedule. In those two years, he has led teams — the Vikings and Seahawks — to regular-season records of 28-6. For his career, he has a record of 49-41.
