Why Patriots’ AJ Brown ‘can’t wait’ to play with Drake Maye in Week 1

AJ Brown and Drake Maye have plenty of excitement for their first season as teammates heading into the New England Patriots’ 2026 campaign.

Maye is preparing for Year 2 of his NFL career, while Brown gears up for his first year with New England following his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots are coming off an incredible campaign last season, reaching the Super Bowl before losing to the Seattle Seahawks.

Brown and Maye took part in an interview with Devin McCourty on NBC. When getting the question about playing with Maye, Brown didn’t hesitate to show his praises for the young star quarterback.

“He’s such a great guy. He always takes the blame for every little thing. I’m like, ‘Drake, it’s OK. It’s not that deep.’ He’s incredible! Fun to play with. I can’t wait,” Brown said.

What lies ahead for AJ Brown, Patriots

AJ Brown and Drake Maye have high expectations going into the 2026 season. The Patriots are counting on them to elevate the offense to another level and make another case for Super Bowl contention.

Brown looks to have a resurgent season after going through inconsistent displays in 2025 with the Eagles. He caught 78 passes for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns. He’s on a four-year streak of having 1,000 or more yards, seeking his 2022 and 2023 form of having over 1,400 receiving yards.

Maye excelled throughout the 2025 season, going 14-3 in the regular season. He completed 354 passes for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He even racked up 103 rushes for 450 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

New England secured the second spot in the AFC bracket, beating the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos. However, they were unable to end it with a title win, losing to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60.

The Patriots’ campaign will get underway on the road with a special matchup. They have a Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks as kickoff commences on Sept. 9 at 8:20 p.m. ET.
