Tanner Houck taking big steps toward making injury return for Red Sox

Tanner Houck was a very important member of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff in 2024. He was good enough that he was selected as an American League All-Star that season.

He started to struggle that season after that honor, and he had a difficult time getting the job done last year before he was diagnosed with an elbow injury that resulted in a hybrid reconstruction of his right ulnar collateral ligament and a flexor tendon repair in August 2025.

Houck has been in the recovery process ever since and he is making significant progress. He threw a simulated game Friday, and he showed no ill effects from that effort. As a result, he will start a rehab assignment with Double-A Portland. He will start off by pitching an inning Sept. 8. If he gets through that without trouble, he will get another rehab assignment. Houck is aiming for a return to the Red Sox late in the regular season.

That would be an ideal situation for Houck because the Red Sox are in a playoff position as they head into the final 21 games of the season.

If Houck can get through the end of the season without any additional issues, he could be in a position to either return to the starting rotation or the bullpen in a key role for the team in 2027.

Houck has six years of big-league experience with the Red Sox. He has a 24-32 career record with a 3.97 ERA. He has 449 strikeouts in 474.1 career innings. He started 21 games in the 2023 season and followed that up with 30 starts in 2024.
