Why Michigan basketball is equipped to handle sudden Dusty May departure

The Michigan basketball program is currently reeling from the recent news that head coach Dusty May would be departing the team to take the same position with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. The news comes just a couple of months after May helped lead the Wolverines to the 2026 national title, and had reiterated his commitment to staying with the program over the long haul on numerous occasions.

While Michigan fans are understandably upset that May went back on his word, recently, Jeff Borzello of ESPN broke down why the university is equipped to handle such a sudden departure.

“…Michigan are experienced when it comes to this sort of sudden, landscape-shifting move deep into the offseason. When (John) Beilein left for the Cavaliers, it was mid-May. Nine days later, Michigan hired program legend Juwan Howard, who had spent the previous six seasons with the Miami Heat.”

The ability to pivot doesn’t just apply to the basketball court in Ann Arbor.

“Jim Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers after winning the national title in January 2024. That happened two weeks after the season ended. Days later, Manuel promoted offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore to the top spot,” he added.

Of course, the Moore hiring didn’t exactly end up working out in the long run, but it still shows that Michigan has plenty of backup options waiting in the wings to respond quickly when something like this happens.

Many anticipate that the Mavericks will target some former Michigan players, particularly big man Aday Mara, in the upcoming NBA Draft, due to May’s arrival as the head coach.

For Michigan, the search is now on to find a new leader of the sidelines as they look to compete for another championship.
