Brewers starter Dustin May’s first start draws trade deadline Tarik Skubal comparisons

While the Milwaukee Brewers made a push for Tarik Skubal at the trade deadline, they lost out to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, they managed to land Dustin May in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Looking at both of their first starts on their new respective teams, you wouldn’t know the difference. Skubal pitched six innings of two-run baseball, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. In a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, May threw six innings of two-run baseball, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five.

Of course, this is much more of an anomaly than a direct correlation between Skubal and May. The former was facing off against the Chicago Cubs whereas the latter took on the Pirates. Furthermore, Skubal is a back-to-back Cy Young winner. No one is putting May in the same class as him.

But at the same time, the Brewers need their newest addition to continue being lights out. Skubal or not, Milwaukee knew they needed starting pitching help at the deadline. As they try to chase a World Series title, May has now become crucial to that quest.

After his Brewers debut, the right-hander now holds a 4.30 ERA and a 111/38 K/BB ratio. His last three starts have pointed to further success, as he hasn’t allowed more than two runs and had at least five strikeouts in two outings.

He may not be Skubal, but the Brewers are now relying on May. In his first act, the right-hander impressed.
