Browns’ Todd Monken says he offered Joe Thomas a role on coaching staff

The Cleveland Browns officially named Todd Monken the new head coach in late January to replace Kevin Stefanski. Nobody knew it at the time, but apparently Monken attempted to hire a franchise legend to join his coaching staff.

Monken, who is 60 years old, stated that he offered former Browns offensive lineman Joe Thomas a role on his coaching staff, according to NFL analyst and insider Andrew Siciliano. The long-time ex-offensive coordinator did not elaborate about the job offer, but considering Thomas is one of the most prolific offensive linemen in league history, Monken likely wanted him coaching the trenches.

“Todd Monken says he offered Joe Thomas a full-time coaching job back in January,” Siciliano reported.

That offer was seemingly passed up, as the six-time First-Team All-Pro is not working as a coach for the Browns. Between coordinators, coaches, and everything else in between, Monken has 39 individuals on his coaching staff. George Warhop is the club’s offensive line coach, while Sanders Davis and Bobby Johnson are the immediate assistants for that position group.

Thomas, meanwhile, is enjoying retirement working on his Hall of Fame Farms in Wisconsin, where he raises Wagyu cattle. The Hall of Famer also serves as an analyst for the Browns during the NFL seasons, and has appeared as an assistant at the club’s training camps since he retired in 2017.

So, although Joe Thomas is not on the coaching staff, he still works closely with the organization, lending a helping hand in the offseason. But you’ve got to give Todd Monken credit for trying to hire one of the franchise’s most coveted players.
